1. FC Heidenheim suffered a 3-1 (1:2) defeat at VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday, missing an opportunity to climb the 2. Bundesliga table. After a shocking start that saw Alexander Bernhardsson score the league's fastest goal of the season after just 34 seconds, Patrick Mainka equalised in the 21st minute, but later strikes from Robert Glatzel and Muhammed Damar secured the points for the hosts.

Early Shock and Swift Response

The match began in the worst possible way for Heidenheim. Following a long ball from Vinicius de Souza Costa, Bernhardsson broke through and finished from close range. The guests did not let their heads drop and replied from a set-piece. After a corner from Jan Schöppner, captain Mainka headed home to make it 1-1. Provider Schöppner is currently Heidenheim's top scorer this season with three goals.

Finishing Proves Decisive

Despite the equaliser, the game remained open. In first-half stoppage time, however, Wolfsburg exploited another lapse in Heidenheim's defence. Joakim Mæhle crossed from the right, and Robert Glatzel netted his fifth goal of the campaign to restore the lead before the break. After halftime, Heidenheim pushed for another equaliser, registering 23 shots in total, but failed to find the net again. Instead, Muhammed Damar made it 3-1 in the 65th minute following an assist from Fabian Reese. Heidenheim's expected goals (xG) of 2.04 contrasted sharply with their single actual goal.

Looking Ahead to Home Fixture

The defeat means Heidenheim remain fifth in the standings with 14 points from eight games, now eight points behind leaders Hertha BSC. Their recent form over the last five matches shows a mixed record of one win, two draws, and two losses. The next task is a home game against eighth-placed Energie Cottbus this Saturday. Kick-off at the Voith-Arena is at 1:00 PM. Manager Schmidt must now rally his squad mentally for this important fixture to avoid losing touch with the promotion places.
