1. FC Heidenheim dropped two key points in Bielefeld on Saturday. After a superior first half and a 2-1 lead at the break, Frank Schmidt's team conceded a 2-2 equaliser and had to settle for a draw.

Strong start fades away

Heidenheim started the match at the Bielefelder Alm dominantly and created the better chances. After falling behind early to a Joel Grodowski goal (13'), the visitors turned the game around. Budu Zivzivadze scored from the penalty spot to make it 1-1 (30'), before Paul Hennrich headed home the lead in first-half stoppage time (45'+3). The team went into the dressing room with a deserved advantage.

The second half, however, was disappointing. Heidenheim faded and could not convert their numerous scoring opportunities into a third goal. Arminia Bielefeld capitalised on this weak phase and equalised through Felix Hagmann in the 55th minute. Despite further efforts, the guests could not find a winning goal.

Consequences for the standings

The draw means Heidenheim maintains its position in the upper third of the table but failed to close the gap to the top. With 13 points from six games, the club remains third in the 2. Bundesliga. The recent form curve, showing three wins, one draw and one loss from the last five matches, continues to indicate positive trends. The full schedule of upcoming tasks, including the home match against fifth-placed 1. The current squad is also ready for the challenges ahead.

The points dropped in Bielefeld are all the more significant as the team was clearly the better side in the first half. Manager Frank Schmidt will need to address concentration in the closing phases before the next matchday. The next opportunity for correction comes with the home game against Kaiserslautern in three weeks.
