The eighth game in the German Baseball League (DBL) could be a decisive one for the Guggenberger Legionäre. Six games before the end of the regular season, the Regensburg team is in second place in the South Division with ten wins and four losses. The titleholders Heidenheim Heideköpfe (12:2) are ahead of them. On Friday (7 pm) and Saturday (1 pm), the two last year's finalists will meet at the Brenz. The situation before the top game is clear: Only with two wins would the Schwabelweiser push the big rival from the top. If the rivals share the successes, the South Championship for the Oberpfalzers would be theoretically still possible, but with four remaining games in the regular season, it would be unlikely. With two losses, the Legionäre would even have to worry about second place. So or so, the duels with the Heideköpfen are more important than ever this year in view of the newly introduced Interleague Round. The three best-placed teams from the North and South groups qualify for the playoff quarterfinals, but play each other in two home and away games to determine the top six. In their first meeting this season at the Danube in late April, the Regensburg team secured a slight advantage. After a 5:9 loss, the team led by coach Matt Vance won 9:1. In the direct comparison, the Oberpfalzers have a narrow lead due to the run difference. The undertaking in Heidenheim will be no easy task for the Schwabelweiser. For the first time since the dramatic loss in game four of last year's final series, the Legionäre will travel to the Ostalb. Additionally, US pitcher Leeroy Tavarez is still missing due to an injury. In the previous week, coach Vance was forced to adjust his pitching rotation. Christian Pedrol started in Mainz game two, which was normally intended for Tavarez. Ex-US pro Tim Fischer took over Pedrol's start in the first game.
