Heidenheim experienced an afternoon to forget against Bayer Leverkusen. The 0-6 loss is the worst defeat in the club's league history. Coach Frank Schmidt was furious after the debacle and found clear words: „6:0 – the result is brutal for us. A shave without foam, that's how I'd put it.“ The coach took his team to task: „Each player must understand that it's not just the coaching team's job to find solutions after the game. Everyone has to take a hard look at themselves.“ Heidenheim was too far away, Leverkusen outplayed us, said Schmidt. The lack of attitude particularly annoyed the coach: „What does fighting mean? Fighting means: making meters, sprints, aggression! I saw that for maybe a minute. After that, not anymore.“ Heidenheim suffered the worst defeat in its league history in Leverkusen and was still lucky with the 0:6 score. A fan in the guest block symbolically waved a white flag in the middle of the second half. Heidenheim's pros have to report: „Each individual will have to explain why they didn't even come close to a normal performance.“ The traveling fans were also angry. After the final whistle, they confronted their team in front of the guest block. Schmidt showed understanding: „The fans have rightly criticized us. Two weeks ago, I still stood up for the team – today I can't do that anymore.“ Heidenheim has it easy, it's our job to come here and play in the Bundesliga. Our fans have to sacrifice their free time and pay a lot of money to support the team. The good thing is: it's been a long time since we've had a situation like this, where the criticism came like that. But we've all deserved this criticism. You don't have to complain or be offended about it. We've deserved it because of how we presented ourselves in this game. Heidenheim now has to improve to survive in the Bundesliga. The loss to Leverkusen is a wake-up call for the club.
