FC Heidenheim 1846 is expanding its sports programme with a new offering for its members. The 2. Bundesliga club is launching a Walking Football team, which will hold its first training session on September 16th. The move positions the club as a broad-based association beyond its professional operations. Currently, Heidenheim sits third in the 2. Bundesliga table with nine points from four games and a goal difference of plus one.
Walking Football is a special variant of football originally developed in England and growing in popularity in Germany too. The club announcement states: "Walking Football was developed in England and is also being played increasingly in Germany." The game focuses on a calmer style of play, movement, and playing football together. Running and tackling are not allowed. The ball must be played flat on the ground, which significantly reduces intensity and makes the sport accessible to new target groups.
The offering is explicitly aimed at all FCH members aged 18 and over. Prior football experience is not a requirement for participation. The 250 FCH club friends can also use the new offering. They have the opportunity to attend up to three training sessions for free without having to become club members. This opens the club's doors to interested parties who want to get to know the club and the sport on a non-committal basis first.
The kick-off for the new team is on Wednesday, September 16th, at 7:00 PM. The venue is the artificial turf pitch of SV Söhnstetten. The address is Gerstetter Straße 12 in 89555 Söhnstetten. The weekly sessions will subsequently take place every Wednesday at the same time and location. Separate changing rooms for men and women are available on site for participants. This infrastructure is intended to ensure smooth operations and comfort for everyone involved.
While the professionals under coach Frank Schmidt are fully in the league race, the new offering shows the club's social roots. Just three points behind leaders Hertha BSC, the team remains tightly involved in the promotion battle. The next challenge is the home match against Holstein Kiel on September 13th, who currently sit in 16th place. The current injury list, maintained on our injuries page, lists Christian Conteh and Sirlord Conteh as currently unavailable.
